To anyone who is interested I will briefly explain how our family website works:

You may or may not have noticed that web pages on the FF website end in .php rather than .htm or .html. PHP (Hypertext Preprocessor) http://www.php.net/ is a web language that dynamically builds web pages from a few configuration files and a MYSQL ( http://www.mysql.com) database. This allows the content on the website to be constantly changing and always up to date. All stories, comments, photos, and polls are stored in the database. PHP calls to the database to get the most recent data and display it on the website. How do we benefit from this? I do not have to manually update the website every time a change is made. This gets us away from static web pages with the .htm or .html extension that have to be updated manually.

In your internet browsing you probably encountered other sites that look similar to fenrichfamily.com. There is a simple explanation for this. We use a portal system or (CMS) that is freely developed under the GNU license by the guys at http://www.postnuke.com. All features or modules of our website are developed and distributed by other contributors to the postnuke society from around the world (very popular in Germany). http://www.portalzine.de/ is a good place to start.

PHP is not a Operating System dependent language. Although it was originally developed for Unix/Linux ( http://www.redhat.com) to run on Apache ( http://www.apache.org/), it can also run on windows and a variety of other Operating Systems.

Our website is hosted by PHP Web Hosting ( http://www.phpwebhosting.com/). They target experienced web developers who need little support to minimize costs.

The beauty on the system: Microsoft's competes with PHP with their own language ASP (Active Server Pages) which you are all familiar with. However, to build a web server using Microsoft technology is very, very expensive:

Windows 2000 Advanced Server + IIS + SQL + licensing ~ $5,000+

on the other hand our systems is all FREE!

Red Hat Linux + MYSQL + Apache + PHP = $0

Long story short... to build your own site similar to FF.com takes time and dedication but not a lot of $$$. Hosting is less that $15/month and all the PHP stuff is free.

Brad, I must admit much of this goes over my head. But I am sure glad you understand it and put it to such good use on our family website. For all you folks out there, Brad is my grandson and I am proud to say he is one smart cookie!
