Autum is upon us already. Living in California, believe it or not, we do have seasons... but have to drive an hour or so to see the trees changing colors in our local mountains. I do this every year.

It's nothing like the fall colors I remember growing up in Michigan though...

We had a tradition in our family. Mom and Dad would bundle up Donald and I and take a day trip to a Cider Mill. I'll never forget the aroma of fresh apple cider and hot doughnuts! After, we would usually take a drive around the countryside and admire the lovely colors - and more often than not - would take a "nature hike", with Donald and I proceeding as "scouts" on the trail.

Later, as teenagers with driver's licenses, we continued this tradition, but called it "color touring" and our found cider was a bit harder.

Now, as an adult, I still go on my little "fall adventure". We travel up to Mt. Laguna in the Cleveland National Forest to a little gold mining town called Julian. They are famous for their apple pies - and yes - fresh cider and doughnuts!

Some family traditions are priceless. They change shape and form and location, but most have their roots from childhood memories and I am so thankful for them...

I have just placed my pumpkins on the front porch, along with my indian corn signifying a "good harvest"... Guess you can take the girl out of Michigan, but you can't take Michigan out of the girl.

I wish you all a "good harvest" this year, and sure would appreciate any photos you have of fall scenes - or even a cider mill if they are still around!

Cheryl,
Your writing is so beautiful and descriptive. Although it's hot here, I am decorating inside to celebrate the fall season. The trees were just starting to turn in the mountains last week and Dad and I enjoyed it greatly. I too remember all our fall tours to the cider mill and nature walks. You're right, some things are unforgettable.
Love,
Mom

Hi Cheryl,
Yep, Franklin Cider Mill (14Mile & Beech Daly?) was the source for all those beginning memories. And, you may recall each of two different incidents on our subsequent tours, usually ending up in Kensington Park in what's now Milford. First one: all of us chasing a Blue Racer snake up a hill while on a nature walk; then the snake chasing all of us down the hill when he had enough. Second one: Donald getting his finger bitten by a Canada Goose on a beach at Kent Lake. I'll bet you he still remembers that one!
Good times, good memories, and soon, hopefully, good Video DVD's and Slide Show CD's.
I love you, honey,
Dad

I just saw a beautiful quotation on A Word A Day that is appropriate for this thread. It goes:

"Winter is an etching, spring a watercolor, summer an oil painting and autumn a mosaic of them all." -Stanley Horowitz

We are getting some beautiful colors right about now. I want to take time out to post some pictures of the pumpkin patch and hay ride at the Farmer's Market in my part of Michigan.

What a wonderful quote... thank you for sharing it! Also, I noticed that it is your and Tom's anniversary on Monday... Congratulations to both of you. Any special plans?

Can't wait to see your photos of the pumpkin patch and farmer's market! I posted some of our search for the great pumpkin in PhotoShare... check them out.

Cheryl,

We celebrated on Sunday by going to the Palace of Auburn Hills to see Simon and Garfunkel in concert. They were great. There voices were as strong as ever and they did 2 hours of all the good stuff that they did together. They also did 2 encores.

Tom had to go to Indianapolis on Monday, so we had to celebrate early anyway.

I hope to get those pics uploaded soon. Just a little crazy around here.

Cool! Simon and Garfunkel together again... How did they sound? Still have their voices and harmony?
