I want to start a new string in this area for our family memories. I'll start it off with one of my fondest memories of my Grandma Fenrich (Margaret Gaspar Fenrich)...
Every year we would have Thanksgiving dinner at Grandma's house. I remember when we arrived at her home and opened the door, the aroma of cooking was just heavenly! Grandma and Auntie Ella would be in the kitchen cooking away and fussing about a "pinch of this" and "a pinch of that". I don't know how it started, but I called the Turkey a "kitty" and would always ask to see the "kitty". When I got a little older, Grandma would let me help. Sometimes I would get to baste the turkey, and they allowed me to stir the gravey. Everyone was always in the kitchen trying to steal a sample!
While things were being prepared, us kids would entertain ourselfs by building "card houses" in the living room. We used to make some awesome structures and I don't know if I would have the patience to the same today. Sometimes, Uncle Gerry would help us with our engineering project. We would constantly try to "accidentally" blow some air in each others direction to knock down the largest structures.
I remember sitting at the "kids" table in the kitchen which was fine for me because it was closest to the food! The mashed potatoes and gravey always seemed to end up with us kids, Grandma made sure of it! Grandma also made sure that I would end up with my favorite... a turkey leg!
These memories of a large family dinner at Thanksgiving, playing with my cousins and learning to cook are some of my fondest... I can still smell the pungent aroma of sweet and sour cabbage. I've tried to make it (with little sucess), but will keep trying until I can duplicate it! :D

What a good memory Cheryl. I too remember the fantastic Thanksgiving dinners with Grandma Fenrich. In addition to all the food you mentioned, Grandma made cucumbers with sour cream and paprika. They were go good. Thanksgiving was a special day with your Grandmother Fenrich. I believe all of us, Jerry, Dianne, Jerry, Jr., Julie, Jennifer, Jodi - Don, Colleen, Cheryl and Donald enjoyed our annual Thankgiving get together. I know that Grandma started preparing the feast 3 days in advance. A lot of work, but she loved it and loved having her family gather at her table.
We only missed one and that was because of a huge snowstorm. We got as far as Lansing, Michigan and had to turn back to Grand Rapids as the roads were not passable. What a disappointment!
