I transcribed 8,805 records from the 1850 census for Warrick County, Indiana for the USGenWeb Project on rootsweb.com last year. Where do you find the time to do all these amazing things Sharon? I checked out the site (didn't even know that exsisted...very cool!) and have always wondered how these documents are transcibed.
Did you actually receive hand written "hard copy" of a document? Then have to try to read the handwritting?

Well, I just set aside a little time each week or month to do my favorite things: cross-stitching, scrapbooking, and genealogy. It paid off bigtime to do the census because I found so many leads for the Lowe family database.
You must sign up to either transcribe or verify a county census. Then they send you the instructions on how to set up their special database configuration (which you load on your PC and fill with data). You must obtain the data yourself either on microfilm or a CD with the images burned on it. I chose the latter because I wasn't close to the Indiana library where they are located and it would cost a small fortune to order from them (I checked so I know). I ordered a CD which cost $50 or $60, I can't remember exactly, and I just plugged away at it until I was done.
When you are done, you zip it and send it to the project people. I don't know how they get someone to verify what I transcribed, but until they do, it won't be posted.
