Origin of the modern English family name

British Surnames: First-names, Localities, Occupations, Nicknames
by John Kennedy

British surnames became fixed in the period between 1250 and 1450. The broad range of ethnic and linguistic roots for British surnames reflects the history of Britain as an oft-invaded land. These roots include, but are not limited to, Old English, Middle English, Old French, Old Norse, Irish, Gaelic, Celtic, Pictish, Welsh, Gaulish, Germanic, Latin, Greek and Hebrew.

Please note that by "British" we mean only 'inhabitant of the British Isles,' not citizen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. We have grouped English, Welsh, Scottish and Irish surnames together mainly because they overlap so often.

Throughout the British Isles, there are only four types of native surnames:

Lowe Family Tree Updated

There have been a couple hundred more individuals added to the Lowe family tree. Thanks to Gloria Gresh Adams, first cousin of Sharon Lowe McDonnell, I added many ancestors and cousins from the Johnston(e) family. She came up to Michigan from Ohio to compare notes and pictures. She has been collecting data on our mothers' family (her mother, Patricia Johnstone Gresh, is my mother, Phyllis Johnstone Lowe's, sister). She has been very successful in contacting family all over the country and back many years. Thanks to her for her extraordinary efforts and for sharing. Below is one of the pictures she shared that I especially like. It is of our grandfather, Samuel Johnstone's, eldest brother (Josiah Johnston) and his wife Louise on their wedding day in 1911.

History Trivia

This story was sent by Karen Stoner via e-mail... Hope you find it interesting!

In George Washington's days, there were no cameras. One's image was either sculpted or painted. Some paintings of George Washington showed him
standing behind a desk with one arm behind his back while others showed
both legs and both arms. Prices charged by painters were not based on how
many people were to be painted, but by how many limbs were to be painted.
Arms and legs are "limbs," therefore painting them would cost the buyer
more. Hence the expression, "Okay, but it'll cost you an arm and a leg."

As incredible as it sounds, men and women took baths only twice a year (May
and October)! Women kept their hair covered, while men shaved their heads
(because of lice and bugs) and wore wigs. Wealthy men could afford good
wigs made from wool. The wigs couldn't be washed, so to clean them they
could carve out a loaf of bread, put the wig in the shell, and bake it for
30 minutes. The heat would make the wig big and fluffy, hence the term "big
wig." Today we often use the term "here comes the Big Wig" because someone
appears to be or is powerful and wealthy.

In the late 1700s, many houses consisted of a large room with only one
chair. Commonly, a long wide board was folded down from the wall and used
for dining. The "head of the household" always sat in the chair while
everyone else ate sitting on the floor. Once in a while, a guest (who was
almost always a man) would be invited to sit in this chair during a meal.
To sit in the chair meant you were important and in charge. Sitting in the
chair, one was called the "chair man." Today in business we use the
expression or title "Chairman" or "Chairman of the Board."

CARTE-DE-VISITE photography

After viewing the photos that Sharon posted, I was curious about this old photography technique. Here is a description of Carte-de-visite in case you are interested:

Cartes-de-visite were small visiting card portraits (usually measuring 4 1/2 x 2 1/2") introduced by a Parisian photographer, Andre Disdéri, who in late 1854 patented a way of taking a number of photographs on one plate (usually eight), thus greatly reducing production costs. (He was not actually the first to produce them; this honour belongs to an otherwise obscure photographer called Dodero, from Marseilles).

Different types of cameras were devised. Some had a mechanism which rotated the photographic plate, others had multiple lenses which could be uncovered singly or all together.

The carte-de-visite did not catch on until one day in May 1859 Napoleon III, on his way to Italy with his army, halted his troops and went into Disdéri's studio in Paris, to have his photograph taken. From this welcome publicity Disdéri's fame began, and two years later he was said to be earning nearly £50,000 a year from one studio alone. **

Major Success Story

 Don’t Give Up!

You hear about it all the time. Genealogists hitting a brick wall and not being able to locate that one ancestor who could create a breakthrough. That was the case in our research of the McDonnell family. My husband, Tom McDonnell, was quite disheartened (bummed out really) that he couldn’t find much online about his family. He found the ship’s manifest from the second of the multiple times that his paternal grandfather came from Europe to America on the Ellis Island website, but he couldn’t find any records in the archives at the Mormon website for any family members.

Tom had a family tree that was hand-drawn by his first cousin once removed going back to his gg grandfather of the Irish family and another one drawn by Tom’s father of his grandfather’s family in America. It had no dates and no spouses listed, but we put it in the Lowe family tree database anyway and added all the information about the nearby relatives that we knew. This information was published to the Fenrich Family website along with all of Sharon’s family.

My "Pa"

Christmas was magical when I was a little girl. As an only child I was somewhat spoiled and the person most responsible for that was my "Pa." He was my mother's father and spent every week-end at our house, and during the Christmas season stayed with us for a week at a time. His name was Fred Fowler, but everyone called him "Pa."

He was so very generous with actual gifts for his only grandchild, granting nearly every request made. But the best gift of all was the time he spent with me, telling stories of his childhood on a farm in Missouri, teaching me card games and listening to me play the piano.

"Pa" encouraged me to make up stories and write them down for him to read. I think that was the beginning of my interest in writing.

We listened to the radio. That's right, there was no TV back then. My parents would not let me listen to radio programs like "The Green Hornet" or "The Shadow" - so "Pa" and I would sneak down to the basement and listen to them. I don't think my parents ever knew!

One Christmas Eve I had a bad flu and that's when "Pa" went into full gear. He put on a puppet show for me with hand puppets, kitchen gadgets and toys. I still remember laughing so hard at his performance.

To this day I think he was the most cheerful person I have ever met. He has been gone a long time, but brings a smile to face even now when I think of him.

Report from San Diego

Oceanside, CA - 10/28/2003

I wanted to give a first-hand report on the horrible wildfires devistating Southern California for the past few days.
First of all, I would like to ask you all to say a prayer for all of those who have lost loved ones and their homes. Over 12 people have died and 650 homes have burned down as of today in San Diego county alone.

Our home in Oceanside has not been threatened. Fortunately we are close enough to the ocean to receive off-shore winds.
We are sustaining smoke damage however, and it is very hard to breathe. We have been warned to stay inside and not drive anywhere. The sky ranges from black to an eerie orange color. The sun is red. Ash is falling from the sky like a light snow.
The mayor of San Diego has asked all business' to remain closed to free up the roads for evacuee's and rescue workers.

The areas burning are inland, with Santa Ana winds (hot dry winds that blow west from the desert areas) fueling huge fire lines over tinder dry brush. We have not had rain for over 6 months.
3 of the 5 fires are 0% contained at this point and are raging unchecked... all that can be done is to evacuate and hope the winds die down.

This is the worst firestorm I have seen in all the years I have lived in SoCal.
God help us all...

I have posted a few pictures in PhotoShare that I borrowed from our local newspaper. When it is safe to go outside, I will try to take some personally.

A General Fenrich History - by Donald R. Fenrich Jr.

Our branch of the F (eh, ah, eah) NRICH name begins in Kirrlach, Karlsruhe, Baden, Germany (although it wasn't Germany then, as you know.) Before I get into the names I've got to let you know that in the Fenrich last name, regardless of how it's spelled, "eh", "ah", "aeh" are all pronounced like the "e" in the word, "step." So, our first KNOWN family name comes from Michael Fehnrich (circa 1728) who produced 3 male heirs; Johannes FENRICH, Joseph FAEHNRICH and George Anton FEHNRICH. The only reason for the variances in spelling is that only a few of the church scribes, priests and other local dignitaries knew how to read and/or write. Most names originally were phonetic spellings, i.e. the strange spellings. Well, anyway, Johannes FENRICH had 7 sons and one daughter: Pius FAHNRICH, Gustav FAEHNDRICH, Fidel FAEHNRICH, Heinrich FENRICH, Michael FAEHNRICH and Herman FENRICH...and, we're still in Kirrlach, Karlsruhe, Baden.

The Internet

DETROIT-Each year, the American Polish Engineering Association, an affiliate of the Engineering Society of Detroit, honors one of their own and one outstanding Polish American engineer, scientist or technician who has made outstanding contributions to the field of engineering. In an effort to honor these people further and to get the word out about the contributions of Polish engineers and scientists, the APEA publishes a booklet about these individuals. They are distributed at the association's annual banquet, as well as to schools, libraries, and other centers.
This year, the APEA honored Paul Baran, the inventor of Packet Switching and internet pioneer. (Packet Switching is the technology that allows information to travel over the internet).

See....it wasn't Al Gore who invented the internet. It was a Pole.

I just thought I would try out the new module that allows us to attach images from PhotoShare to our Submit News articles. I saw the links about writing good headlines, and as a professional technical writer was curious about where these links would take me. The "Writing for the Web" link took me to an article written by Catherine Titta of ArborComm. Catherine is the immediate past president of the Society for Technical Communication (STC). I am a senior member of that professional society for technical writers and know Catherine personally. I have been a member of the Programs committee under her regime and others as well. She also presented in a couple of my tech comm classes at Eastern Michigan University. Too bad I can't attach a .wav file with the "Twilight Zone" theme!

Randolph Columbus Doom branch in Texas

----ORIGINAL POST BY Lizajane ON SEP 8th----

I stumbled onto your site and forum today after finding the missing link from my family to Jacob Doom. Have read with great interest the many postings and replies. Here is my connection to all of you: Jacob and Abigail had a son, John born 1785 in Bardstown, Nelson Co., KY, who married Mary "Polly" Kelly, b. @1789 in SC, on 25 Feb 1810 in Caldwell Co., KY. They had five children that I know: Isaac, Randolph, Henry, Jacob and Jesse. Randolph was born 7 Jan 1811 in Caldwell Co., KY.

He migrated to Texas in time for the War for Independence from Mexico and served as paymaster in the Army of the Republic of TX in Henry Hubbe's company. Upon entering Texas he listed "violinist" as his occupation and stated that he had read law in KY. He was at the Battle of San Jacinto, which ended the war. He is said to have played "Come to the Bower" on his violin for Sam Houston. The violin now belongs to the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, though my own son is a professional violinist. The Colonel (which was more honorary than earned title) was first married to Nancy Ward. They had James, Sarah Ann Elizabeth, Mary Frances and Helen. Nancy died in Austin, Travis Co., TX the year Mary Frances was born. (One year later on 15 Aug 1847 he married Altazera Williams Everitt, widow of Stephen Everitt. They had David, Jennie and Nancy Elizabeth.) Sarah Ann Elizabeth Doom was born 25 Feb. 1843 and wed Thomas W. Causey, born 17 Mar 1824 in MS, on 13 May 1858 in Jasper Co., TX. By that time Col. Doom had served variously in the Republic's Legislature and after Texas was admitted to the U.S., in the state legislature. He also served for a time as Customs Agent for Sabine Pass, appointed by Republic President Sam Houston. He was a plantation owner and attorney in Jasper Co. He was elected County Judge 3 times. He died in December 1881 in Jasper. His daughter "Eliza" and Thomas had seven children, Mary "Mollie", Phillip (a violinist), Nancy "Nannie", Arch B., Helen, Nellie and Frances "Fannie" Causey. Note the naming of children for beloved Doom relatives and also Causeys. Arch B. Causey was born Dec 1869 in Jasper Co., TX and married May Kellie, dtr of Capt Edward Irwin Kellie and Mattie S. Brown, in @1893 in Jasper. She was born 30 Jan 1873 in Jasper. Their eight children included Leon Bertram, Lexie May, Edgar, Thomas, Gladys, Ruth, Irma, and Archie. Leon was born 27 Sep 1895 and married Grace Musgrove of Merryville, LA in @1825. She was born 14 Jan 1904. Their children were LB, Jr. and my mother Bety Jo, born 10 Nov 1930. Eliza Doom Causey died 16 Jan 1939.

Candi and Jason are expecting a baby in April or possibly May

Candice Elizabeth Frazier Donaldson and Jason Ray Donaldson announced at the Lowe-No Talent Show September 6, 2003 that they are expecting a baby in April or May of 2004. Jason wasn't in attendance as he was at a softball tourney near Grand Rapids. But Candi, as part of her talent, dressed in a very loose top with a pillow under it to look the part. She also carried a baby doll someone from work got her. She was the first talent and came out and made the announcement. She won a trophy for best costume.

Candi hasn't been to the doctor to confirm it but took two home tests and both were positive. When asked which sex she hoped for she said one of each and if that means twins, that would be cool too. Twins run rampant in both families.

We congratulate Candi and Jay and realize none of our lives will ever be the same.
