Straight Ahead

<font color="#800000" size="2">

Our scientists work to discover
Wonder drugs which will cure all our ills
But I think the major problems of man
Will never be conquered with pills.

Man is the strangest of creatures
He is thoughtful and kind, and he prays
He speaks only of peace at his tables
But his wars keep the whole world ablaze.

And yet when you stop to consider
Whether you like it or not
Without that competitive nature
Where would man ever have got?

Advice

When I was young, and knew it all,
My father somehow had the gall,
To tell me I had much to learn,
My knowledge didn’t cause the earth to turn.

Of course I never listened much,
That vanity of mine was such,
That I couldn’t credit that old gent,
With wisdom and accomplishment.

I hadn’t then the sense to see,
That all of his advice to me,
Was good and wise, but now I know,
I wish that I could tell him so.

FAMILY STORIES

As recollected by or told directly to Colleen Joyce Lowe Fenrich

Summer, 1942 - Mt. Carmel, Illinois

Conversation with my great grandfather, James Nathaniel Dooms on my summer vacation in Mt. Carmel. Most summers my Dad and Mom and me drove to Mt. Carmel for a week and stayed with Grandmother and Grandfather Dooms. Please note that they were referred to as Dooms, not Doom.

Grandad had a butter churn on the back porch. As a child I loved to sit on his lap in a rocking chair and churn the butter. That’s when he would tell me stories, some of them about our family.
