Note:
Land grants and other records indicate that Jacob Doom was in America earlier than 1781 (the date that family tradition says Henry was believed to have been born on the Atlantic Ocean enroute from Germany).
When Jacob Doom, Sr. died in 1798 in Washington Co., Kentucky, his widow was Abigail Clark. However, because of her age and some other things it is believed that she is not the mother of Jacob's older children. She was probably his second wife. Marriage records have not been found. The family was suppose to have been in Culpepper Co., Virginia before moving to what is now Washington Co., Kentucky. His farm was near what is now Bardstown, Kentucky in Nelson Co. One son, Benjamin Doom, was a successful businessman in Bardstown. He seems to have been the only child to have remained in that area.
A Jacob Doom was in Berlin, Pennsylvania prior to the 1780's. The will of Christian Booger dated 29 July 1779 mentions land bought of Jacob Doom, located in Bedford Co., Pennsylvania.
From Ernest Grand
Jacob served as a sergeant in the Jefferson Militia, Virginia, in July and August 1780 under Capt. Lewis Hickman in actual service on an expedition against the Shawnee Indians in Ohio under General George Rogers Clark. I have a copy of the payroll.
Jacob arrived in Somerset Co., Pennsylvania in 1774-1775. That is from a book about early Somerset settlers.
Below is the Will and the Will Probate of Jacob provided by Barbara Ragsdale:
IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN I Jacob Doom of this county of Washington and State of Kentucky being very sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory thanks be given to God do______and ordain this my Last Will and Testament in manner following I recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God that gave it and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in a decent Christian manner at the discretion of my Executrix and as touching such worldly estate wherewith it has pleased God to help me in this life. I give devise and dispose of the same in the following manner. First after all of my just debts are paid; I give and bequeath to my dearly beloved wife all the plantation on which I now live. Ye reasonable compensation shall be made her for that purpose and be it understood that when my youngest child comes to a lawfull age all my property shall be sold and my wife should she survive taking her third part the balance to be equally divided among my children or their heirs considering Sarah Grimes or her heirs as one of my legal heirs, and entitled to an equal part with the rest of my children as have received any property shall be estimated and its value divided from her equal part, and so much as the _______of the before mentioned shall overgo the charge for keeping the children, all those that are of age shall receive their equal part of the rents, and so on as they may come to a legal age the minors part being always kept in the hands of the executors, and be it known that I do constitute make and ordain Jacob Yoder my executor and Abigail Doom my wife executrix of this my Last Will and Testament and I do hereby disallow and revoke all former testaments will. From Ernest Grand 23 September 2001
Jacob Doom is said to have been born near Hamburg. My researches led me to Homburg Saarland, southern part of Rhine-Palatinate, near the French border, west of Kaiserslautern. People often made confusion between Hamburg, Homberg and Homburg. The folks who arrived with Jacob in Pennsylvania where, the most of them, from that area. The Ankenys' father was born in Lambsborn, 5 miles from Homburg. Others are from places less than 100 miles from Homburg : Yoder (grandfather of Jacob Yoder), Himmelberger (father of Ulrich Heavenhill). A Dohm/Dhom family was in the area, 15 miles from Homburg in the 1600s. So, theses clues make me think that Jacob or his father was from a village near Homburg. This family religion was Lutheran and Evangelish.
